While there are certainly a lot of great recipes for liver, the truth is that we don't always get around to making them. Liver doesn't freeze well, so from the moment you field dress any large animal, the clock is ticking. This recipe is a quick and easy way to get a lot of use out of those livers, reduce waste, and make a supremely happy pup.
Quick baking recipe that creates a crunchy dry treat that your dog will love. Perfect for the self-sufficient hunter!
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Rinse the liver and be sure it is clean of all debris and clotted blood.
Slice the liver into 1-inch-wide strips.
Toss the liver into the blender or food processor. Blend until the consistency of a thick milkshake.
In a large bowl, mix the liver puree with the flour and add the egg. If the resulting batter is too watery, add a little more flour.
Spread the batter into a well-greased cookie sheet, or sheet lined with parchment paper. Batter should be 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch deep.
Bake at 350 degrees F for 30 minutes.
Using a knife or pizza cutter, score the treats into 1/2 inch squares.
Drying is a crucial part of success for these treats. Turn off the oven, and return the scored treats to the oven for about 10 minutes.
These can be eaten immediately, but in order for them to store well, we need to dry them completely. Remove the treats, and break them up with a spatula. Toss them so more sides are exposed, and return them to the oven. Allow them to dry, with the door open, for another 1-3 hours.
These treats can live in the refrigerator for well beyond a week. If they are completely dried, they can also be stored at room temp for a week.
